Bernie’s unhappy with the police

Just read about my mate Bernie’s travails at the hands of the Gardai Siochana near Pearse St in Dublin. I guess there’s a general perception that the gardai in Ireland deliberately flirt traffic regulations merely because they can rather than in the legitimate pursuit of police duty.

CWBB-ish behavior

As all keen followers of this blog will note, I’ve recently become part of a CWBB. My CWWBB-heart (relax R) and I have engaged in all manner of CWWB-ish behavior over the past few weeks so I’ve decided to come up with a top 10 list of CWBB-ish activities. Not saying I’ve been a partner in cyber-crime in all of these but we’re certainly very CWBB’d up
Anyway here’s the list! Feel free to comment and to post anecdotes (sad, witty & most likely both) about your own CWBB-dom:

  1. video-conferencing with your signifigant other while sitting on the same couch
  2. Having IM conversations using smilies that nobody else knows
  3. Having IM conversations consisting entirely of smilies
  4. Creating custom MSN winkies to send to each other as tokens of your undying affection and chronic addiction to IM
  5. Sending emails to one another while sitting at the same table
  6. Instant Messaging while sitting at the same table
  7. Leaving messages for eachother on eachothers weblogs
  8. Telling your friends you’re part of a CWBB using your blog 😛
  9. Telling your friends you’re part of a CWBB
  10. Having lengthy discussions about how you’ve both been liberated by wireless networking and laptops while bashing your keyboards inside on a sunny day

IST objective – Environmental Risk Management

Hi Honey,
I’ve been having a chat with a few friends of mine in the EU IT sector about
developing a proposal to meet the following objective.
http://www.cordis.lu/ist/so/env-risk-management/home.html

One of the ideas that I had was to use the technology that I developed when
I was working in TSSG (WIT) to manage arrays of sensor networks in
controlling a national networks of water pollution sensors. UCC have done a
lot of work in sensor network management through the National
Microelectronics Research Centre. This coincides neatly with their law
faculty’s promotion of environmental issues. As has DCU via their National
Centre for Sensor Research. I have friends in all these places.

Part of the operation of this network would involve testing for a range of
pollutants, transmission of pollutant information to a central coordinating
point in real-time, real-time statistical trend analysis to determine
environmental risk factors at any particular time and environmental crisis
management. The creation of a greater european network with the involvedment
of european and worldwide NGOs operating in the area of environmental would
enable european wide environmental issues to be analysed on a per country
basis and could help direct european environmental policy through the
provision of real-time accurate data about air pollution, water pollution
etc. THe IST programme is great for funding such a project as:
– they have millions to spend on this particular programme
– the love Integrated Projects which are large-scale work programmes with
commercial, non-profit and academic interests throughout europe.
– we’re hitting all the current Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) buzzwords including “sensor-nets”, “enviromental risk management”,
“ambient intelligence”, “mesh networks”… Wow, be still my beating
technophiliac heart honey!

I suggest you have a serious think about this as I’d love to write a
proposal in this area, my track record in obtaining funding is damn good &
it would pay for the following:

– trips to brussels and other major european cities to disseminate
information at conferences on IT and the enviroment
– consultancy fees for all concerned for the next 3 years
– the development and deployment of pollution measurement equipments
throughout ireland.
– rigorous scientific analysis of pollution issues through collaboration
With leading universities in the area.
– legal assistance from major national and european firms
– the creation of signifigant intellectual property associated with
innovative technologies for risk management.
– & much more besides !!!!

Have I told you lately that I love u? Well I do,

…shane

Shocking news about increasing your brain power

Don’t worry. Gaisan’s blog hasn’t been taken over by one of those spamming bots promoting Human Growth Hormone, a larger appendage or a higher IQ. Still, I read some rather shocking (pardon the terrible pun) news from the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke. The study investigates the effects of Functional Electrical Stimulation and wired has an article with soundbytes from key staff. It appears that a small (2 mA) current passed through electrodes attached to the surface of the forehead can increase a subjects’ verbal skills. In the study, volunteers were asked to think of as many words as possible that begin with a particular letter. The current was applied and the challenge was reissued. After the current was applied volunteers were able to come up with on average 20% more words. It is hoped that these findings could be used to create a new drugless treatment for neurological illnesses or used to repair brain trauma. The researchers are as yet unclear as to why the current effectively stimulates brain function but Eric Wasserman, a scientist at the institute proposed the following conjecture:

“What we think we’re doing is changing the electrical environment of neurons and causing them to change their activity,” said Wassermann.>

The only side effects observed so far are a “tingling senstation” around the area where the electrodes are applied. However “It’s unknown whether chronically overdriving an impaired system might cause it to burn out faster”
