tax rich kids

Not my advice but another suggested initiative for the government. You can read the irish times article hereThe sustained war on the middle classes continues unabated with huge taxes on buying houses, cars and luxury items like soap. Given the modest level of the student grant in comparison with living costs for students I think that we’re an expensive enough country to live in besides yet another balance-the-books tax that reduces the benefits available to the hardworking middle classes. The impact isn’t discussed in the article so I’m hopeful if cautious that any such initiative would be implemented sensitively.
The Irish economy is at a pivotal moment as it tries to move from a building bubble to a sustainable knowledge economy. Government policy should reflect this with greater investment in every aspect of education, including the financial supplements available to all parents to help educate their kids.

Port in a storm

An extract from Jim Port’s report which has finally been released by the Department of Education.

“We therefore conclude that, in terms of its profile and plans against the criteria that might be expected to be used in a Section 9 examination, WIT has made a serious case that would deserve to be investigated on the merits of the case. However, broader national policy factors have to be considered and we review these in the next chapter.”

This paragraph neatly sums up the dilemna facing Jim Port and indeed WIT. The government have been unclear about whether an application for University status from an IoT under section 9 of the Universities Act 1997 could be entertained on policy grounds. The policy is unclear which means it’s very much down to the minister du jour to set the agenda for reconciliation of a strong application with an unclear policy.
Would a redesignation have highly negative repercussions on the IoT sector, notably reducing the technical and sub-degree education provided within this sector?

“There are several assumptions being made by those who express these concerns – for example, we do not believe that all 14 IoTs would seek or gain university status, and nor do we believe that undesirable mission drift is an inevitable consequence of university status – this has not been the case in the UK, for example”

However, it’s saddening to see the Irish Times publish yet another attack on WIT’s application under the headline “University status report on Waterford sceptical”. Madam, let’s be clear the report is most sceptical about the rationale behind section 9 when he has himself been informed that “Ireland does not need additional universities” Unfortunately, the Ireland under consideration is the Ireland of ministers, senators and little else beyond the pale & the people’s republic.

A thought

A society has to evolve itself without benefitting from vicarious lessons from other societies. Probably because most people don’t effectively learn without first hand experience. As I’m typing this I’m watching a tv programme about american child preachers. It strikes me that with harsh neo-conservatism to the fore, if often appears that much of america hasn’t benefitted from the renaissance. The critical thought and analysis that so enlightened European philosophy and even spirituality has been discarded in favour of simplistic and unquestioning religiosity. There’s little I can think of more disturbing than hundreds of adults hanging on every word of a 7 year old telling them how homosexuality is evil and how all illnesses can be cured by faith. It’s terrifying. Even more so when you have parents making thousands from merchandising. So that’ll be a one way express ticket to the 9th circle for them. 🙂

the phone as an AP

I saw this earlier today and thought it was really cool. I’m off to Mobile World Congress next week to demonstrate some of our work on the IMS-ARCS project. I guess if the tradeshow’s internal network should crash I can always turn my N95 into an Access Point. I’m kinda hoping this doesn’t happen but it would certainly be enviably geeky 🙂
