Today I watched an average if well organised German side defeat a hugely talented Argentinean team in the World Cup quarter final. The blame for the defeat has to be laid entirely at the feet of the Argentine coach, Jose Pekerman, who with footballing riches at his disposal confined them to the bench in the hope of hanging on to a slender 1-0 lead. What a pity! I’ve seen enough of the German side to know that the further stages of the tournament won’t be enlivened by their presence and enough of Argentina to know they’ll be sorely missed. To paraphrase the former England footballer Gary Lineker “football is a game that’s played for 90 minutes and unfortunately the Germans win!”
