Using Instant Messaging for Mobile Business

I got thinking about the implications of IM-Bots when I worked for the TSSG research group in Ireland. IM-Bots are pseudo-intelligent automated IM buddys that responds to queries using greater or lesser degrees of Natural Language Parsing (NLP) and knowledge inference. One of the most famous is the Alice-Bot which uses Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) to associate semantics (like running a program) with parsed syntax. I’ve written a paper about using IM-Bots as virtual shopping assistants which is available here

text for the SecurIST website

Hi Brian,
Here’s a text excerpt for front page of the SecurIST website.
http://www.ist-securist.org
I’m not sure they’re going to run with it because I’ve just invented it off
the top of my head but here goes.

SecurIST is a EU Framework Programme 6 Coordination Action (CA) Project

While the importance of effective computer security is generally recognised
its economic impact isn’t widely appreciated. This is highlighted by the
following statistic:
“Hacking and computer viruses ranging from Melissa to the Love Bug will cost
global businesses around 1.6 trillion dollars”
– PricewaterhouseCoopers, Nov. 2000

SecurIST will attempt to ameliorate this situation throughout the EU by
preparing, supporting and facilitating the rapid adoption and transfer of a
strategic research agenda for ICT Security and Dependability R&D. The
overall aim is to provide Europe with a clear view of the strategic
opportunities, strengths, weakness, and threats in the different dimensions
of Security Research.

The SecurIST project, as a co-ordination activity, will bring cohesion to
security projects within the IST framework and help to foster a common and
collective set of objectives for promoting early development, deployment and
awareness of security networks and solutions.
From the projects/researcher perspective, the thematic activity will assist
in
– Maximising take-up and exploitation of results through exposure in wider
forums.
– Establishing synergies between research activities in ICT Security
Research, both across IST projects and others.
– Sharing of best practice and lessons learnt – removing the need to
reinvent wheels
– Identification of obstacles to deployment (market, infrastructure,
awareness, etc)
– Accessibility to a wider user platform for take-up and awareness (feedback
cycle)
– Contributing to the definition of follow-on research within a wider
framework

Talk to you tommorow about this project.

Sincerest regards,

…shane
