That’s about the size of it…

Something to consider in all discussions about Waterford’s status as a city and the funding it requires from Government, development plans etc.. Waterford is surrounded by several other dormer towns with relatively little or no industry of their own. I’ve listed these with commute times to the border when there’s little traffic on the road & no, I don’t speed:

  • Ferrybank; 1 minute away :); pop: 3000 and expanding quickly
  • Dunmore; 10 minutes; pop: 1,750
  • Tramore; 8 minutes; pop: 8,799
  • FaithLegg; 5 minutes; pop: 1905
  • Woodstown; 6 minutes; 590
  • Kilmeaden; 10 minutes; 599

These population figures are taken from the Waterford County Council website
The suburbs of Waterford city are expanding with new housing and commercial development so the city boundaries themselves are no longer accurate. Add these to the official census figure for Waterford city of 45, 748 and you have around 61,000 people living in the greater Waterford area. who are mostly reliant on Waterford city to provide amenities and employment.

R was right, I’m a machine enthusiast

I am nerdier than 99% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!
I constantly argue that an enthusiasm for machines (computers, cars, watches, rockets etc.) and how they work makes me curious rather than nerdy. Unfortunately thanks to a link from JB I can confirm the horrible truth. Despite all the attempts to branch out, be an entrepreneur (LOL) I’m a geek. Unfortunately, I’ve more interest in maths & mechanics than I have in computers at the moment. I guess it’s a growing sense of ennui as each new development fails to deliver on the promise of easy application development and instead creates a new language to learn or a new toolset. Some days it seems great, others I feel like I’m an aging practitioner of a dying and arcane art. I remember reading Doug Coupland’s book Microserfs and thinking that nerds just weren’t supposed to grow up.

Me & Wii

As one of the co-workers Paul Watson mentions in his post on the Nintendo Wii I’d can confirm that it is AMAZING fun. For a compulsive gadget-buyer it’s an absolute must. It’s much cheaper than the 700+ quid (and still officially unreleased) PS3 and while it’s graphics are admittedly a bit more basic, it’s great fun. The motion sensitive controllers are nothing short of brilliant. The responsiveness could be improved but their sensitivity to delicate movement is very impressive in the tennis and boxing games that come with the Wii. Thanks to my old friend Kristian Walsh of ByteForm & TSSG for giving us the demonstration and taking such a pummeling 🙂

Einmal ist keinmal

My thought for today is in German. The “unbearably light” never grow up but repeat their childhood ad infinitum. It’s a playful irony indeed 😉

“Als das Kind Kind war,
ging es mit hängenden Armen,
wollte der Bach sei ein Fluß,
der Fluß sei ein Strom,
und diese Pfütze das Meer.
Als das Kind Kind war,
wußte es nicht, daß es Kind war,
alles war ihm beseelt,
und alle Seelen waren eins.”

– Peter Handke from the screenplay for Wings of Desire
