{"id":274,"date":"2007-09-17T22:36:32","date_gmt":"2007-09-17T22:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gaisan.com\/wordp\/?p=274"},"modified":"2007-09-17T22:36:32","modified_gmt":"2007-09-17T22:36:32","slug":"the-little-run-down-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gaisan.com\/blogs\/?p=274","title":{"rendered":"The Little Run-down Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To the tune of &#8220;The Ugly Duckling&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><br \/>\nThere once was a little rundown country<br \/>\nwith fields of green and brown<br \/>\nAnd the other states of, with wealth so great said<br \/>\nWelcome to EC town<br \/>\nSo we went with a swagger and a roll and a gait<br \/>\nand signed on the dotted line<br \/>\nSo the poor little rundown country<br \/>\na former colony with no wealth of its own<br \/>\nsigned on the line<br \/>\nits future assigned<br \/>\nat a meeting they held in Rome.<br \/>\nyes a meeting, a treaty, a meeting they held in Rome.<br \/>\nSo the poor little rundown country<br \/>\nfinally had money to survive<br \/>\nThe few rich made cakes<br \/>\nfrom overflowing butter lakes<br \/>\nand refridgerated everthing not alive.<br \/>\nrefridgerated, yes refridgerated, we froze the bejaysus out of everything not alive.<br \/>\n(change in key)<br \/>\nAll through the 70s and most of the 80s<br \/>\nwe struggled and we scraped,<br \/>\nthose of us with more, hid it all offshore<br \/>\nAll through those years,<br \/>\nwealth was rare indeed<br \/>\nfarmers made their livings from animals and seed<br \/>\nTil a proud and cunning king<br \/>\nwho owned nearly everything<br \/>\nhad a stunning revelation of the<br \/>\npower of low corporate taxation.<br \/>\n&#8220;Only the rich are saved<br \/>\ngreed is good he raved<br \/>\nInvest in companies a chara<br \/>\nF*&#038;king make it so O&#8217;Meara :)&#8221;<br \/>\n(change to original key and take deep breath!)<br \/>\nSo the modestly wealth no-longer rundown country<br \/>\nwith competitiveness statistics that enticed<br \/>\nBecame the leading manufacturer, outside the US- in fact we were,<br \/>\nof everything from software to computer mice.<br \/>\nSo our now quite wealthy little country<br \/>\ngot the cash, we&#8217;d craved for years<br \/>\nWhen you&#8217;ve got BT&#8217;s, you&#8217;d never want for Sears<br \/>\nDebt seemed very cheap, twas no surprise to see<br \/>\na million quid spent recklessly on a 4 bed semi-D<br \/>\n(long pause to reflect)<br \/>\nOh there once was a little country, that refused to face the facts<br \/>\nThe construction industry has sold half the country into a life of slavery<br \/>\nHours of traffic jams, 2 jobs, no kids unplanned<br \/>\nand the promise of negative equity.<br \/>\nYes the promise, the guarantee, the absolute irrefutable fact of impending negative equity.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah sure, I don&#8217;t mean it really. The government are as much if not more to blame \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\nApologies for the bad rhyming, I guess it&#8217;s the sentiment that counts.  I&#8217;m buying a house at the moment and am totally fed up of the vested interests (aka auctioneers) telling me that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The market isn&#8217;t affected really, there&#8217;s a lot of scaremongers about.<\/li>\n<li>Houses at this price level aren&#8217;t affected (lucky me!)<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a few years of boom to go<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s a fair price, we&#8217;re only acting in the best interests of the seller<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;re taking the houses off the market, it&#8217;s always easier to sell in the new year and we&#8217;ll be putting the prices up I&#8217;m afraid.<\/li>\n<li>There may be a dip but we&#8217;re confident of a &#8220;soft landing&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cobblers, as they say. How is it that with supply outstripping demand by almost 2 to 1, thousands of empty houses and apartments all around the country, crazy multiples of income to debt and thousands of jobs dependent on a sector which has been showing signs of slowing down for over 18 months will there somehow be a miraculous &#8220;soft landing&#8221;.
