SecurIST is a EU Framework Programme 6 Coordination Action (CA) Project<\/p>\n
While the importance of effective computer security is generally recognised
\nits economic impact isn’t widely appreciated. This is highlighted by the
\nfollowing statistic:
\n“Hacking and computer viruses ranging from Melissa to the Love Bug will cost
\nglobal businesses around 1.6 trillion dollars”
\n\t– PricewaterhouseCoopers, Nov. 2000<\/p>\n
SecurIST will attempt to ameliorate this situation throughout the EU by
\npreparing, supporting and facilitating the rapid adoption and transfer of a
\nstrategic research agenda for ICT Security and Dependability R&D. The
\noverall aim is to provide Europe with a clear view of the strategic
\nopportunities, strengths, weakness, and threats in the different dimensions
\nof Security Research.<\/p>\n
The SecurIST project, as a co-ordination activity, will bring cohesion to
\nsecurity projects within the IST framework and help to foster a common and
\ncollective set of objectives for promoting early development, deployment and
\nawareness of security networks and solutions.
\nFrom the projects\/researcher perspective, the thematic activity will assist
\nin
\n– Maximising take-up and exploitation of results through exposure in wider
\nforums.
\n– Establishing synergies between research activities in ICT Security
\nResearch, both across IST projects and others.
\n– Sharing of best practice and lessons learnt – removing the need to
\nreinvent wheels
\n– Identification of obstacles to deployment (market, infrastructure,
\nawareness, etc)
\n– Accessibility to a wider user platform for take-up and awareness (feedback
\ncycle)
\n– Contributing to the definition of follow-on research within a wider
\nframework<\/p>\n
