{"id":648,"date":"2010-03-23T14:37:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T14:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gaisan.com\/blogs\/?p=648"},"modified":"2010-03-30T22:53:55","modified_gmt":"2010-03-30T22:53:55","slug":"greatest-waterfordians-not-on-rtes-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gaisan.com\/blogs\/?p=648","title":{"rendered":"Greatest Waterfordians not on RTE&#8217;s list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While flicking through the fantastically inane RTE list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sliabh.net\/?p=2233\">Greatest Irish People<\/a>, I was struck by how the lack of scientists, engineers and the inclusion of minor celebs and <em>flash in the pan<\/em> types such as Louis Walsh &amp; Colin Farrell. No disrespect to either of them, the have to share a list with Joe Dolan \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Did they round up people to vote based on cluelessness? This list has to be a joke. Can nobody in Montrose see it?<\/p>\n<p>With my Waterfordian chip firmly weighing my shoulder down I also noticed that two obvious omissions from the list are Ireland&#8217;s only scientific Nobel Prize Winner, <a href=\"http:\/\/nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/physics\/laureates\/1951\/walton-bio.html\">E.T.S. Walton<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Boyle\">Robert Boyle<\/a> also known as the <em>&#8220;Father of Chemistry&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To that we&#8217;ll add <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Palliser\">John Palliser<\/a> (a hero in Canada), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Francis_Meagher\">Thomas Francis Meagher <\/a>(designer of the Irish flag) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luke_Wadding\">Luke Wadding<\/a> (who started the St. Patrick&#8217;s Day celebrations). You can take your <em>&#8220;Greatest Irish Person&#8221;<\/em> list and shove it where the sun doesn&#8217;t shine RTE, we&#8217;ve got our own! \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\nIn all seriousness, it&#8217;s disturbing how little knowledge the list compilers had <em>(apparently the general public)<\/em> of Irish scientists, economists, engineers or indeed anyone not obvious or tabloid. If they&#8217;d been able to Google they could have found this <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Irish_people\">list of famous Irish people<\/a> on wikipedia. Although, admittedly that list applies the same selection criteria as Jack Charlton, who could have made the list himself. Still, its science list includes Irish born scientists such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Desmond_Bernal\">John Desmond Bernal<\/a> (X-Ray Crystollography) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lighton_Synge\">John L Synge<\/a> (major contribution to Black Hole research).<\/p>\n<p>William Reville has a nice article about our Scientific heritage at his <a href=\"http:\/\/understandingscience.ucc.ie\/pages\/irishscientists.htm\">Understanding Science page<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While flicking through the fantastically inane RTE list of Greatest Irish People, I was struck by how the lack of scientists, engineers and the inclusion of minor celebs and flash in the pan types such as Louis Walsh &amp; Colin Farrell.
