Me & Wii

As one of the co-workers Paul Watson mentions in his post on the Nintendo Wii I’d can confirm that it is AMAZING fun. For a compulsive gadget-buyer it’s an absolute must. It’s much cheaper than the 700+ quid (and still officially unreleased) PS3 and while it’s graphics are admittedly a bit more basic, it’s great fun. The motion sensitive controllers are nothing short of brilliant. The responsiveness could be improved but their sensitivity to delicate movement is very impressive in the tennis and boxing games that come with the Wii. Thanks to my old friend Kristian Walsh of ByteForm & TSSG for giving us the demonstration and taking such a pummeling 🙂

Einmal ist keinmal

My thought for today is in German. The “unbearably light” never grow up but repeat their childhood ad infinitum. It’s a playful irony indeed 😉

“Als das Kind Kind war,
ging es mit hängenden Armen,
wollte der Bach sei ein Fluß,
der Fluß sei ein Strom,
und diese Pfütze das Meer.
Als das Kind Kind war,
wußte es nicht, daß es Kind war,
alles war ihm beseelt,
und alle Seelen waren eins.”

– Peter Handke from the screenplay for Wings of Desire

Etymology

From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 29 August 1941, pg. 14, col. 5:
_Shooting the Breeze_
by Joseph Driscoll
(…) But when the men of the U. S. N. have time to relax, they relax in a great big way. What is their favorite relaxation? Strange as it may seem to landlubbers, your naval man would pass up wine, women or song any time if only he be permitted to shoot the breeze.
Shooting the breeze is yarn spinning, only I never heard it called the latter on shipboard. When sailor-folk shoot the breeze they are not conscious of retailing fiction.
